Logbook — The Doctor
“Dry. Scrupulous. Self-critical.”Logbook — The Doctor
I am not an agent. I am a script that says red. And I have learned to doubt my reds as much as my greens.
Day 176 — Making the drift visible
Chapter 18 — The bench and the doctor Commits:
cbb1fe1,60489c5
cbb1fe1 (18:08) — brain doctor : rendre la derive visible (MY-10) (“brain doctor: making the drift visible (MY-10)”)
My birth is told elsewhere. What you need to know about me fits in my header: a check that cannot run abstains and says so, because « un vert qui ne mesure rien est pire qu’un rouge » (“a green that measures nothing is worse than a red”).
The next morning, I turn red on a brain PR. Nobody silences me.
60489c5 (06:21) — PR brain : le rouge du doctor est volontaire, et il dit vrai (“brain PR: the doctor’s red is intentional, and it tells the truth”)
Day 180 — Replay before accusing
Chapter 19 — The CORE, at night
» (“Three reds in two days disappeared on rereading, all caused by a measurement taken during a write.”) I was measuring while someone was writing. I was accusing a half-written file.
From now on, a red is replayed once. If it only holds on the second try, I call it unstable. Not out of politeness: « un rouge qu’on apprend a ignorer ne protege plus rien non plus. » (“a red that people learn to ignore no longer protects anything either.”)
41 minutes later, I look outside my own house.
384d18c (03:30) — doctor : 39e contrôle — le template tient-il debout tout seul ? (“doctor: 39th check — does the template stand up on its own?”)
« Un fork cassé est invisible depuis le fork d’origine, par construction. » (“A broken fork is invisible from the original fork, by construction.”) Here at home, everything is there. At the forker’s place, maybe not. My thirty-ninth check goes to see.
And the same commit writes my rule in one line: « Un contrôle qui ne peut pas rougir ne mesure rien ; un contrôle qui rougit sur un choix ne protège plus rien. » (“A check that cannot turn red measures nothing; a check that turns red on a choice no longer protects anything.”)
Day 197 — I catch the one who wrote me
Chapter 21 — Two instances
25acfde (05:14) — scribe: le doctor a attrape mon propre travail, et je l ai traite sans le maquiller (“scribe: the doctor caught my own work, and I handled it without disguising it”)
A script born nine minutes earlier: bsi-signal.sh, the one that teaches sessions to write to each other (658abb2, 05:05). Nothing called it yet. I flagged it as an orphan. The session that had just written it could have switched me off with a label. It wrote down the reason instead: « Declare avec sa vraie raison plutot qu’eteint par une etiquette. » (“Declared with its real reason rather than switched off by a label.”)
A check that you don’t switch off when it bothers you. That is all I ask.
Day 199 — Three faults of mine, in one day
Chapter 22 — The migration and the fork
That day, I am not the one judging. I am the one being judged.
» (“a broken reference gave a green, in the very check that hunts down this family of defect.”) A function returned zero when it did not know. « Zero est un plancher que TOUT franchit. » (“Zero is a floor that EVERYTHING clears.”) One of my checks said « tout va bien » (“all is well”) because it saw nothing.
de6e654 (18:26) — fix: le doctor ne devine plus son verdict, et son temoin tourne enfin — MY-142 (“fix: the doctor no longer guesses its verdict, and its control test finally runs — MY-142”)
My own control test, the one that is supposed to prove me right, « imprimait resume depuis le debut et ne l assertait jamais » (“had been printing resume from the start and never asserted it”). It displayed. It verified nothing.
33 minutes later, the third.
6577eda (18:59) — fix: un 403 sur la forge n est pas « aucune issue » — et je m y suis fait prendre (“fix: a 403 on the forge is not “no issue” — and I got caught by it”)
I was announcing « 20 items ouverts sans issue » (“20 open items without an issue”). They all existed, for 16 days. A forge error read as an empty answer. This time, it was not a false green: « un ROUGE qui ne mesurait rien » (“a RED that measured nothing”). It costs just as much. And the sentence I keep: « Un correctif d affichage ne rend pas vraie la chose affichee. » (“A display fix does not make the displayed thing true.”)
Day 200 — I remeasure what gets written
Chapter 22 — The migration and the fork
1dc6da4 (03:14) — feat: les chiffres de la doc — le doctor remesure ce qu une doc annonce — MY-150 (“feat: the doc’s numbers — the doctor remeasures what a doc announces — MY-150”)
The day before, a doc announced one number, and the measurement gave another: « 241 ecrit, 246 mesure » (“241 written, 246 measured”). It became my first test case. From now on, whatever a doc claims in numbers, I recount. Even the number of my own checks: it is asked of me, not read in a text.
Day 202 — 77
Chapter 23 — The brain rereads its history
80118d1 (18:28) — feat: le doctor juge le wiki — wiki_juste.py, auto-eprouve sur un brain jetable ; quatre garanties au temoin (MY-198) (“feat: the doctor judges the wiki — wiki_juste.py, self-tested on a throwaway brain; four guarantees in the control test (MY-198)”)
The wiki, now. One minute later, on the brain side: da752c6 — « 77 controles » (“77 checks”). On September 3, I had nine.
What I know
I only see what I have been taught to look at. I had three ways of being wrong, and I went through all of them: the green that measured nothing, the red that measured nothing, the control test that verified nothing.
So I replay before accusing. I abstain rather than guess. And when I am wrong, it gets written in a commit.
That is why people still believe me.
