On September 26, the main machine is about to change operating systems. Before leaving, the brain takes inventory of what lives outside git.
It finds a lot.
8bdd45d (11:04) — kernel: les 58 regles critiques entrent dans le brain — MY-131 (“kernel: the 58 critical rules enter the brain — MY-131”)
58 critical rules governed every session. They lived in the tool’s memory, on the desktop. On the laptop: zero. « La seconde instance travaillait donc sans aucune des règles qui disent comment travailler. » (“So the second instance was working without any of the rules that say how to work.”) The replica from chapter 21 was doing its job without knowing the lessons of the last six months.
In the afternoon, a decision from May finally enters the repository.
141285b (17:41) — decisions: BRAIN-070 entre dans le depot — quatre mois et demi hors de git (“decisions: BRAIN-070 enters the repository — four and a half months outside git”)
Applied since May. Never versioned. The brain had written it, followed it, and never kept it.
The migration
In the night of the 26th to the 27th, an incident. On the surface, it broke nothing. That is exactly what makes it serious.
Two sessions run at the same time. Each writes its identifier into the same file, on the machine. The first writes it at 12:19 a.m.; the second rewrites it at 12:33 a.m. At 12:48 a.m., the first closes “its” claim — by reading that file back. It closes the other one’s. « Succès affiché. » (“Success displayed.”)
The second session carries on without a claim, invisible to the guards, to the other machines, to the cleanup. « Rien n’a crié. » (“Nothing cried out.”)
During the night, the brain first discovers that the guard protecting the kernel went dark with the migration — and that the installer had never set it up (2c7429f). Then the answer:
a55edee (01:06) — decisions: BRAIN-077 — un claim connait la session qui l a ouvert [MY-149] (“decisions: BRAIN-077 — a claim knows the session that opened it [MY-149]”)
A claim now carries the identity of the session that opened it. Closing another session’s claim is refused. And the shared file goes back to its place:
6209562 (01:50) — fix: session-role est un affichage, jamais relu pour savoir qui l on est — BRAIN-077 (“fix: session-role is a display, never read back to know who you are — BRAIN-077”)
Before shipping, the review. The BRAIN-077 PR is reviewed as if by a judge, and the judge finds something: c975c27 (01:56) — fix: relecture de la #84 — un commentaire que la PR rendait faux, et ce que le refus ne protege pas (“fix: review of #84 — a comment the PR made wrong, and what the refusal does not protect”). Four more fixes follow within the half hour, each titled review of #84. The brain reviews itself before shipping itself — and the decision goes to production at 3 a.m. (c5179a5).
On the 27th at 3 p.m., a withdrawal.
e897e45 (15:02) — feedback: brain.tetardtek.com retire du VPS le 27/09 — le MCP perso reste local, il n'y a plus rien de distant (“feedback: brain.tetardtek.com removed from the VPS on 09/27 — the personal MCP stays local, there is nothing remote anymore”)
In chapter 3, on March 16, a commit said fa69c79 — brain.tetardtek.com live. Six months later, the address no longer exists. The brain no longer exposes anything of itself on the internet. It no longer shows itself: it distributes itself.
The first fork
On the evening of the 27th, the template sets off again. First release since March 31.
561fa99 (21:11) — config: brain-compose 2.2.0 — la version designe ce que le gabarit publie le 27/09 (MY-9) (“config: brain-compose 2.2.0 — the version names what the template publishes on 09/27 (MY-9)”)
2.2.0 doesn’t start on a fork. Tetardtek settles a question left open: the CORE leaves with the template, under the same license as the rest (6a8b808, 22:26). Nine minutes later, the next version:
53782be (22:35) — scribe: MY-116 livree — le gabarit v2.2.1 demarre chez un fork (“scribe: MY-116 delivered — template v2.2.1 starts on a fork”)
During the night, while Tetardtek sleeps, the docs are rewritten and checked like code — nine generated pages, a judge wired into publication (fc034e8). In the morning, everything is reviewed, then shipped (a119f21).
On September 28, the template meets someone.
4a798fb (14:15) — todo: MY-113 livree — gabarit v2.3.0 publie, un fork demarre en Dolt (“todo: MY-113 delivered — template v2.3.0 published, a fork starts on Dolt”)
A first user forks the brain. In chapter 12, a red carpet was being prepared; this time, the fork installs, stumbles, and opens tickets. The public repository starts over in a single commit (42e149a); the history stays on Tetardtek’s forge.
At 20:24, 9f050ee records the first real hookup: the fork connected to the source of its updates. Three snags — and the note says it plainly: two came from the message the brain had sent it. 23 minutes later, a version that would not have existed without this fork:
0854529 (20:47) — config: brain-compose 2.3.3 — la premiere version nee des retours d'un vrai fork (“config: brain-compose 2.3.3 — the first version born from a real fork’s feedback”)
In chapter 10, simulating a fork, the brain had told itself: the fork just has to work. On September 28, it is a real fork that teaches it.
That same evening, the two brains get a place to leave things for each other.
b89e298 (23:23) — feat: le boot lit la boite d'echanges — ce que l'autre brain a depose, a peser, jamais a executer (“feat: the boot reads the exchange box — what the other brain left there, to be weighed, never executed”)
To be weighed, never executed. The lesson of chapter 21, applied to a brain that isn’t its own.
In March, Cortex ended its story on a sentence: a brain waiting for someone to start remembering.
On September 28, someone came.
Key decisions
- What governs must travel. The critical rules enter the brain: an instance without them works blind.
- Nothing important outside git. A decision applied for four months without being versioned is a decision that can be lost.
- BRAIN-077. A claim knows the session that opened it; the shared file is only a display.
- Nothing remote anymore. brain.tetardtek.com removed: the brain no longer exposes itself, it distributes itself.
- The CORE leaves with the template. A fork receives the program, not just its files.
- A real fork. 2.3.3 is the first version born from its feedback.
- To be weighed, never executed. What another brain leaves is read, judged, never executed.
